In our latest webinar, we took a closer look at the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) journey from government targets and industry challenges to how partnerships like Right Fuel Card x Rightcharge are helping fleets make the switch more smoothly. Hosted by Asset Finance Connect.

The conversation brought together insights on where the country currently stands, government policy, what’s holding some businesses back, and how we in the industry can make EV adoption simpler for fleets of all sizes.

Are the government's EV targets achievable?

The UK remains on track to meet its current EV targets, but as Matthew and Charlie discussed, maintaining that progress won’t be easy. Ongoing policy support, infrastructure investment, and business engagement will all be key to keeping things moving in the right direction.

While the overall trajectory is positive, the long-term sustainability of these targets depends on consistency, both from government and from the wider industry.

Discussing EV range anxiety to payment anxiety

EV range anxiety has long been one of the most talked-about barriers to EV adoption. However, as charging networks expand and vehicle technology advances, a new challenge is emerging: payment anxiety.

Drivers and fleet operators are now asking:

  • How do we pay easily across different EV charge points?

  • How do we separate home and business charging costs?

  • How do we keep admin low and visibility high?

These are the real pain points businesses face as they begin managing mixed fleets of petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles.

Right Fuel Card’s role: Making fuel management admin simple

At Right Fuel Card, our mission has always been simple: to save businesses time and reduce hassle when it comes to managing fuel and charging payments. For many of our customers, the tool they use to simplify their fuel payments is fuel cards.

As fleets begin introducing electric vehicles, that mission remains the same. We’re focused on ensuring that payments are seamless, accurate, and easy to manage, whether drivers are filling up on the road or plugging in at home.

Our goal is to make it easier for businesses to manage the administrative tasks that come with a changing fleet, without adding complexity or cost. Rightcharge supports with their easy payment system when it comes to at-home charging.

Rightcharge partnership: A smarter way to manage mixed fleets

That’s why our partnership with Rightcharge is so important. Together, we’re helping fleets through the transition period when vehicles are still a mix of combustion and electric by simplifying how businesses pay for energy.

With the integration between Right Fuel Card and Rightcharge, companies can:

  • Link specific vehicles to the Rightcharge app.

  • Track and separate home charging from private energy use.

  • Automatically manage payments through established energy provider relationships.

This means clearer billing, less admin, and more control for fleet managers, all while supporting the shift to electric vehicles.

Taking carbon seriously

One of the key discussion points was around carbon reduction. While large corporations often have clear CO₂ goals, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) perhaps don’t yet see it as a priority above the everyday requirements of running their businesses.

We don’t think that sole traders or small businesses should fall behind when it comes to vehicle decarbonisation and believe every business, no matter its size, has a part to play. We’re committed to supporting companies that want to make a difference, offering the tools and insight they need to measure and manage their impact.

Industry insight: A changing landscape

Another topic raised during the session was the wider industry picture. Notably, some major oil companies, including BP and Shell, have recently reinvested in traditional energy sources, signalling a temporary step back from their EV ambitions.

This move highlights the uncertainty still surrounding the pace of the EV transition. While some players are slowing down, others, like us, are looking for ways to accelerate the change by offering practical, business-led solutions.

Looking ahead: Expanding EV support

Our ambition is clear: to continue expanding into more markets with EV-focused solutions that make life easier for our customers.

The road to a fully electric future won’t happen overnight, but by simplifying payments, building strong partnerships, and supporting every stage of the journey, we can help fleets transition with confidence.

Because when it comes to cleaner, smarter fleet management, we’re all driving in the same direction.
